STEP to Begin

North Plainfield Police Department

June 11, 2008, Press Release

Chief William Parenti

North Plainfield Police Chief William Parenti is pleased to announce that the Borough’s STEP, (Summer Teen Evening Program), is set to begin on Thursday, June 26, at Stony Brook School on Grove Street.  The program will run from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  The program allows borough youth to gather in a safe and secure environment for pickup basketball games, soccer, and conversation.  Refreshments are also provided.

Funding for the program is provided by the Municipal Alliance and the Youth Services Commission.  Besides volunteers from these organizations, there are always personnel from the Board of Education and the Police Department on site.

This year will be the program’s ninth year in operation and is considered a huge success.  “We have upwards of seventy-five youth some nights, even more, and we have never had a problem. It’s great exposure between the borough’s youth, adult volunteers, Board of Education personnel, and police officers in a relaxed positive setting”, Chief Parenti said.

The program will run every Tuesday and Thursday from June 28 to August 14, from 6 pm to 9 pm.  The program culminates on the last night, August 14, which will include a picnic in Green Acres Park. All borough teens are welcome to attend.
